DA vs DR vs Traffic: Which Metrics Actually Predict a Good Link

Written by the Speka team — we place 500+ links a month· 3 min read
DA (Moz) and DR (Ahrefs) estimate a site's link strength — both can be inflated cheaply. Verified organic traffic is much harder to fake, which is why it should be your first check, with DR second and DA a distant third.
DA vs DR vs Traffic: Which Metrics Actually Predict a Good Link

Buyers obsess over the wrong number. They chase DA like it's a rank, when it's a third-party guess. Here's what each metric really tells you, and the order to trust them in.

What DA measures (and how it's gamed)

Domain Authority is Moz's 0–100 prediction of how well a domain might rank, based mostly on its backlink profile. It's a comparative estimate, not a Google metric. Because it keys off links, it's the easiest number to inflate: point a pile of cheap links at a domain and DA climbs while the site stays worthless. Treat DA as a rough, easily-faked signal.

What DR measures (and how it's gamed)

Domain Rating is Ahrefs' equivalent, based on the strength and quantity of referring domains. It's generally more robust than DA, but it's still a backlink-derived score, and still gameable with enough junk domains. DR is more useful than DA — just never on its own.

Why traffic is the honest metric

Organic traffic is the number of visitors a site earns from search. To fake it convincingly, someone would have to actually rank for real keywords — which is the whole thing you're trying to buy access to. That's why traffic is the hardest metric to manufacture and the most predictive of a link's value. A trafficked page is a page Google already trusts.

Traffic quality: country split and trend direction

The headline traffic number isn't enough. Check two things. Country split: does the traffic come from your target market, or from one unrelated country (a classic bot tell)? Trend direction: is traffic flat/growing, or falling off a cliff after a penalty? A site bleeding traffic is a site to skip, whatever its DR. We surface both on every listing, and safe buyers always read them.

The 3-step evaluation order

Do it in this order, every time: 1. Organic traffic — real, relevant, and stable or rising. 2. Domain Rating — as a secondary confirmation of link strength. 3. Domain Authority — a distant tiebreaker, nothing more. If a site fails step one, the other two don't matter. This single reordering will keep you out of most bad buys.

How Speka verifies and refreshes metrics

We pull metrics from the tools you already trust, show organic traffic and country split alongside DA and DR on every card, and refresh them regularly so you're not deciding on stale numbers. We list sites for their real traffic, not their inflated scores — which is why our catalog skips a lot of high-DA, no-traffic domains other marketplaces happily sell.

Frequently asked questions

It can be, but only if the site also has real organic traffic. DR 50 with strong, relevant traffic is a solid buy; DR 50 with a few hundred visitors is a manufactured score. Always pair the authority number with a traffic check.
